Psychodynamic Therapy for Relational Trauma
Trauma that occurs within the context of relationships, such as in the case of childhood abuse and neglect, can be especially damaging. Trauma is defined not just by the particulars of what a person experiences, but when an experience is so distressing and overwhelming that it leaves them feeling helpless and unable to cope. During and after a traumatic experience, an individual may feel desperate to leave their environment, their bodies and minds.
There are multiple therapy approaches recognized for their ability to treat trauma, including prolonged exposure, EMDR, IFS, and relational psychodynamic therapy like that practiced here at Emerge. What each of these approaches share is the common thread of processing one’s experience with a therapist. How they differ is in their hypothesis of how that processing might lead to change. In relational psychodynamic therapy, we believe change occurs through relationships.
In psychodynamic work, we explore your current life, as well as your past, your internal world (thoughts, feelings, dreams), your environment and place in the world, and the relationship between therapist and client. When working with individuals who have experienced trauma, this work also includes psychoeducation on the nature of trauma responses, as well as skills building to help manage distressing symptoms (such as dissociation or flashbacks). Lastly, a psychodynamic therapist works to create reparative relational experiences where the client can unpack feelings of shame and guilt, in the context of a trusting, safe relationship. This can include working through moments of misunderstanding, disappointment, or urges to avoid therapy or run away.
“When our early wounds take place in the context of relationship, it’s through relationship–
a certain kind of healthy, attuned, deeply caring relationship– that the biggest healing happens.”
